- Description
-
These images were taken for the August 13th, 1978 edition of the Tribune weekly newspaper, the first of which was published.
The caption read: “Mr Jenkins and the new Sherwood Motor Inn.”
An extract from the article by Stephen Stewart read: “Another of New Zealand’s biggest tourist operators is to bring busloads of tourists into Palmerston North.”
“…Trans Tours, will be bringing its own bus loads of tourists to the city from this week. They will be accommodated at the brand new Sherwood Motor Inn in Featherston Street. Trans Tours announced their intention in June, and the news was then seen as a tourist breakthrough for Palmerston Noth by many people associated with the industry…”
The Sherwood Motor Inn was officially opened 7 September 1978 with Terry Jenkins as Manager and his wife Pam, the House Manager. It featured a large restaurant and a conference room.
These images form part of the Manawatū Evening Standard Negative Collection. Unfortunately, only negatives between April and December 1978 are held.
