These images were taken by the Evening Standard on either the 27th or 29th of December 1980, the first of which was published on the 30th. They depict a moment of action from the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield 2-day match between the Auckland and Canterbury women’s cricket teams. Canterbury won by 10 wickets.
The caption read: “AUCKLAND bowler Penny Baker winds-up before delivery against Canterbury yesterday.”
Match report by David Ogilvie: “Canterbury, on paper the best all round team at the tournament and the winner in the past two years, struggled against Auckland the first two-thirds of the match, batting hesitantly on the soft wicket to lead by only a meagre two runs.
But when Auckland batted for a second time, the combined medium-pace attack of Sue Brown, Sheree Harris and Kay Gilray was just too much, and Auckland was routed for only 46.
Heather Shale, top scorer in last year's tournament, looked much better after scoring nought in the first innings, and was 28 not out when the team was dismissed
As if to answer criticisms of their batting in the first innings, Canterbury openers Lesley Shankland and Ann McKenna batted through to the 45 runs required without too much difficulty. Obviously Canterbury is going to be very tough to beat, and today's match against Wellington could well decide the tournament.”
