Description

The old septic tank system at Awapuni is seen here in a derelict state, soon after being closed down in 1968. There is little growth of vegetation inside the empty tanks indicating that the date is about 1969. These septic tanks were constructed by Mr D. Burke (contractor) and at the time were the largest outside of England. The Palmerston North Borough Council the spent 38,000 pounds on the new sewage system, including the laying of the connecting series. These septic tanks originally accompanied the large filter beds located between the tanks and the Manawatu River, but these filter beds were eventually removed and over the years the plant was upgraded. These septic tanks were used until 1968 when the new ¾ million dollar plant began operation close to the original tanks.
