Sketch of a design by London-based sculptor Gilbert Ledward for a memorial in The Square, Palmerston North, circa 1923. Commissioned by The Palmerston North & Districts Soldiers' Memorial Fund.
Reverse reads: "Small sketch submitted for the House of Lords Memorial. Subject - Courage symbolised by the youth, who, standing astride his fallen enemy, holds aloft his shattered sword. The serpent of evil strikes the youth at the moment of victory. This sketch... has been submitted in a limited competition which has not yet been adjudicated."
The Palmerston North & Districts Soldiers' Memorial Fund was established on 9 November 1923, continuing the work of a Soldiers' Memorial Committee which had been operating since 1920. The Chairman of the Soldiers' memorial Fund Committee was Mr F J Nathan, Mayor of Palmerston North, while the secretary was Mr John Permain, Secretary of the Manawatu Patriotic Society.
