Te Matai Homestead
More Info →- Description
-
John Taylor Dalrymple bought the 815 acre Te Matai property at the district's first auction of Crown Land in 1866. He is reported to have settled there in 1868 and it is likely that the original section of the house, the single-storey kitchen and living area visible behind the main two-storey portion, was built around this time. It is likely that the main two-storey portion was added in time for Dalrymple's marriage in 1873. Further alterations took place in November 1877, including the addition of a new bedroom. In 1881, Dalrymple sold the property to Arthur E. Russell. Prior to 1900, the gabled two-storey portion was added to the front of Te Matai.
