Description

The two 20 metre totara logs were brought to Pahiatua from the Whirinaki Forest in December 1979. The carver in the photograph is Fred Clamp and the project was led by Mātahi Avauli Whakataka-Brightwell. The double-hulled waka was made to traditional standards and in 1985 sailed the traditional route of Te Arawa-Tainui from Tahiti to Rarotonga then south-west to Aotearoa.
