- Description
-
These images were taken for the December 3rd, 1978 edition of the Tribune weekly newspaper, the first of which was published with the caption: “Mt Everest conqueror, Antarctic veteran, and humanitarian Sir Edmund Hillary pictured chatting to pupils from Palmerston North Boys' High School. Sir Edmund was the guest of honour at the school’s morning assembly, and was presented with a cheque for $200. The money was raised from donations by the boys, and will be used to aid the people of Jumbesi, Nepal. The Palmerston North Rotary Club has adopted a project to raise $10,000 for the building of a clinic and hostel at Jumbesi. Sir Edmund visited Palmerston North for a 36-hour stopover, at the club's invitation.”
These images form part of the Manawatū Evening Standard Negative Collection. Unfortunately, only negatives between April and December 1978 are held.
