Description

The 1953 flooding of the Manawatu and Oroua River was one of the worst on record for the area.It is said that the floodwaters reached the windowsills of this family home. A family member returned to the house to collect much needed supplies when the telephone rang. The company who owned the petrol pumps next door wanted them to be checked, but they were still under a foot of water at the time.
