“Bunnythorpe Sewerage System Under Way At Last”
- Description
-
These images were taken for the June 11th 1978, edition of the Tribune weekly newspaper, the first of which was published with the caption “The site for oxidation ponds for Bunnythorpe's sewerage scheme, in farmland near Ngaio Road.”
An excerpt from the article read: “Bunnythorpe's long awaited sewerage scheme is under way - but completion will be behind schedule. And that's going to hold up another sewerage scheme. First planned in the 1960's, the Bunnythorpe scheme has been plagued by administrative, financial, and other difficulties for years. However, work on the scheme finally started about four months ago. But there has been a snag: the work was to have been completed this month. Because of unforseen [sic] delays. the completion date is still some months away, according to the Oroua county clerk, Mr I. C. Lovell. One of those delays has been an unexpected problem with the railway tracks which bisect the small township. The sewerage line eventually had to be bored under the twin tracks, a job which was accomplished a fortnight ago. Mr Lovell said the contract price for the scheme's work was $88,000, although there were other costs as well which would make the job more costly than that.”
These images form part of the Manawatū Evening Standard Negative Collection. Unfortunately, only negatives between April and December 1978 are held.
