These images were taken for the August 6th 1978 edition of the Tribune weekly newspaper – the first of which was published with the caption “Elated with his win, a delighted Warren Fuller raised his arm in triumph.”
The short article read: “About 3200 people competed in Radio 2ZA'S great disco dancing competition last month and two brothers took first and third places. The contest final was held in Palmerston North on Friday, (July 21) in the Barber Hall, and about 1700 young people attended, danced, and enjoyed themselves.
After hours of frantic disco dancing to loud music, 21 finalists were chosen. The finalists were the result of competition in the final and from earlier heats in Feilding, Pahiatua, Foxton, Levin and Palmerston North. The winner of a $100О Fountain stereo system presented by Manawatu TV and Sound, was Wayne Fuller, of Palmerston North. Third in the contest was his brother. brother, Lance. And Jeanine McKenna was awarded second place by the panel of judges.
Radio 2ZA staged the disco championship in conjunction with Coca-Cola bottlers, after an approach to the station by the Boys Brigade. The brigade was trying to raise money for the Philip Shaw Memorial Fund, to construct a building for its members' permanent use at Foxton Beach. The brigade's target for the fund is $30,000, and the disco competition swelled the total amount raised so far to $12,400. On the final night of the of the contest, radio announcer Phil Langdon presented a cheque for $2400, the nett proceeds from the contest, to the Rev H. Shaw, representing the Boys' Brigade.”
