The 1983 Lion Brown sponsored 21.1km half marathon was run by 416 competitors of all ages and skill levels. Hemi McGill took out the mens competions with a time of 1hr 12min 6sec. It was the first time the junior 5000 metre champion had run the distance.
The women's competion was won comfortably by Masterton's Dianne Taylor with a time of ihr 20min 6sec, over three minutes ahead of nearest rival Bev Shingles of Wanganui.
First veteran home was Kia Toa's Stan Galloway (1hr 18min 43sec). Youngest to finish was 8 year old Jamal Howes from Marton (2hr 24min 13sec)
