Description

During the first Covid-19 lockdown, Blueprint Makerspace used 3D printers to produce over 800 face shields with the 'Sheild's Up' initiative.

The flexible head bands were printed in one piece, although the design was iterated 6 or seven times during the project. Eight bands could be produced per 3D-printer bed, with each set of eight taking eight hours to print. The clear PET plastic for the shield faces was laser cut in Upper Hutt at a rate of 5000 per day. Each shield took around a minute to assemble by Library staff and a number of volunteer makers in the community.

The completed shields were provided to local dentists, midwives and the sterilisation department at Palmerston North Hospital.
