Local historians weekly "Back Issues" article in the Manawatū Standard. The history of fancy dress and fancy dress balls in Palmerston North.
The earliest fancy dress ball in Palmerston North is believed to have been held at the Forresters' Hall on Te Marae o Hine/The Square in 1878, attended by Mayor George Snelson and his wife Louisa Snelson in costume. The balls were a fixture at many local schools for a large part of the 20th Century. Fancy dress featuring historic costumes was also part of the city's jubilee parades.
