2018N_2017-20_MS000797 - Ninetieth Birthday Celebrated
- Description
This image was taken (but not used) for a story that ran in The Manawatu Evening Standard on 19th January 1966 "Friends and relations of Miss Marion L. Squire yesterday gathered at her home at 237 Ferguson Street to celebrate her 90th birthday. Miss Squire was the fourth of nine children of the late Mr. and Mrs. W.D. Squire, of Stoney Creek Road, Bunnythorpe. With her sisters, Miss Squire as a five-year-old, walked three and a half miles each way to the old Whakarongo School. Later moving to Palmerston North, where her father operated a joinery factory, Miss Squire became a first day pupil of the Campbell Street School. Many a time she drove a horse and trap from Palmerton North to Ohakune when there were no bridges on the road beyond Taihape, and also thought nothing of walking five miles each way to go to church on Sunday. --- The picture shows Miss Squire with her only brother, Mr. W.H.J. Squire, who is 83, and one of her sisters Mrs. F. Law, aged 88.
