A group gathering outside the Ashhurst Post Office to hear the proclamation of the accession of George V, who was proclaimed King of the United Kingdom and British Dominons, and Emperor of India, after the death of his father King Edward VII. King George V was monarch until his death on 20 January 1936. The Ashhurst Post Office was built in 1897. In October 1991, the building was purchased by the Palmerston North City Council and became a branch of the Palmerston North City Library.
