“Bus Fares System Finally Settled”

This image was published in the April 30th, 1978, edition of the Tribune weekly newspaper with the caption “Fares fair on the buses?”
An excerpt from the article read: “It wasn't easy, but the Palmerston North City Council decided on a new flat rate fare structure at its meeting on Wednesday night. The council decided, at its meeting in March, that a flat rate structure would be better than the old "section" charge system, but could not agree on how much individual fares should be. In adopting the proposal then, the council made Palmerston North the first city in New Zealand to have such a system. However, while the issue was only decided on the mayor's casting vote, it was decided that a fresh examination should be made to assess what the new charges should be. The revision came before the council's Wednesday night meeting, and was adopted, with two deletions. The new fares and system will apply from May 29.”
