Dignitaries at the opening of the 2nd Ashhurst Bridge. The original bridge was washed away in the 1895 flood and due to disputes a new bridge was not built until 1909. In the intervening period a punt was used to ferry vehicles and passengers across the Manawatu River. The 2nd bridge was replaced with a concrete structure in 1969.
