This image was taken for a story that ran in The Manawatu Evening Standard on 17 August 1985. "Edie Martin hands over her chain of honour to the Free Kindergarten Union's new president Brian Elliott."

Both hailing from Palmerston North, Edie Martin was president of the union for two-years with Brian Elliot serving as her vice-president. The handover took place during the union's national conference held at Massey University.

Martin was elected to the union's national executive in 1968 and served three terms as the Manawatu association's president between 1965 and 1982. She was also appointed to the Palmerston North Teachers' College Council in 1974.

Elliot was a key figure in the amagamation of the Manawatu, Rangitikei and Waiouru associations into the Ruahine association on the union. He was also vice-president of the Manawatu association from 1979 to 1983.
