Description

This image was taken for a story that ran in the Manawatu Evening Standard on 8 September 1976 with the caption, "Detective Sergeant Mick Glynn of Palmerston North CIB searches through the ashes under the grandstand's canteen counter." Identified in this picture is Laurie Simpson (left) and Fred Capes (at right in plastic leggings) of the Fire Safety team.

The image accompanied this news item: "The Palmerston North Showgrounds grandstand has been declared safe for spectators at Sunday's Ranfurly Shield match between Hawke's Bay and Manawatu. A fire in the canteen under the stand last night caused fears that part of the 2200 seat stand might have to be closed for the match. But a safety clearance was given at 10am today by the city corporation building inspector. Arson has been ruled out, but the cause was still unknown early today."
