This image was taken for a story that ran in the Manawatu Evening Standard on 8 September 1976 with the caption, "Detective Sergeant Mick Glynn of Palmerston North CIB searches through the ashes under the grandstand's canteen counter." It accompanied this news item: "The Palmerston North Showgrounds grandstand has been declared safe for spectators at Sunday's Ranfurly Shield match between Hawke's Bay and Manawatu. A fire in the canteen under the stand last night caused fears that part of the 2200 seat stand might have to be closed for the match. But a safety clearance was given at 10am today by the city corporation building inspector. Arson has been ruled out, but the cause was still unknown early today."
