  • Recruits sitting in the Grandstand

A group of about 25 army recruits sit in a grandstand, presumably at the Awapuni Racecourse which was home to one of New Zealand’s largest training camps in World War One, and was the sole location for training the New Zealand Medical Corps staff. The inscription on the reverse reads: "18.2.1918
Thanks very much for Harrys, then mothers letter. Haven’t done much correspondence here and the change in life I find very marked. Under circumstances couldn’t give details of suitcase as goods are despatched only when there is a load. Had one days “faintness” – got to two meetings in Palmerston yesterday. May D.V.
