Jimmy Carter, former President of the United States of America, visited Palmerston North between 10 and 13 February 1984 as part of a week-long visit to New Zealand organised by the Lions Clubs of Middle Districts and Manawatū. Brian Elwood was Mayor of Palmerston North from 1971 to 1985. He was a local solicitor who became a City Councillor in 1968. Sir Brian received a knighthood in 1990.
