Group discussion, Teaching experiences during the late 1960s and early 1970s - Manawatu Conversations
- Description
Broadcast on Manawatu People's Radio, 21st January 2025. All interviewees were teachers between 1967 and 1990s. Most went from school to teachers college except VickiMarie who went to university first. Dianne went to a trial training college at North Shore which doesn’t exist anymore – there were no exams and a very free environment. She loathed it. Degree qualification was required by 2000. New teachers started work at a school and were confronted by a class with no behaviour management strategies or practical experience. Behaviour management with diverse students is one of the hardest things to control. ‘Normal’ schools had teachers with skills to pass onto student teachers. Open plan learning introduced later which created problems for students who couldn’t concentrate in a noisy environment. It was not workable for new entrants. Literacy programmes have been a big change to benefit a lot of students who cannot read. Discipline was sometimes controlled by teachers with physical punishment. Social media nowadays is a huge challenge for families and students. Social skills of students declined as social media expanded, Limited conversation skills. Not so much talking at home. Students now are two years behind before they even start school. Difficulty catering for new immigrants, many who went to ESOL (English as a second language) classes. Huge changes over the last 50 years.
