“Manawatu Science Fair Starts Wednesday”

This image was published in the September 3rd 1978 edition of the Tribune weekly newspaper with the caption: “One of the entrants in the Manawatu Science Fair, Brent Zimmerman, prepares his exhibit for the show. Brent, 17, is a student from Palmerston North Boys’ High School. He exhibited in the 1976 show, and won two prizes then, and is confident of success with his latest project, which is designed to show the acidity or alkalinity of materials. The chemistry indicator can be used to check on the condition of water in swimming pools, and aquariums, as well as the condition of soil in gardens, the state of boiler contents, as well as investigating a range of technical topics.”
An excerpt from the article read: “Record entries have been received this year for the Manawatu Science Fair, which starts on Wednesday at the Queen Elizabeth College Hall. This is the Fourth Science Fair to be held in Palmerston North and each year a new venue has had to be found to accommodate be found to accommodate the ever-increasing numbers. This year’s fair has attracted 250 entries, many of which involve more than one pupil, so that there are over 400 pupils involved form [sic] schools in the Manawatu area.”

“The contest's organising chairman, Mr O. V. Shaw said the entrants compete for prizes donated by many local and national firms and organisations and several individuals. I and several individuals. In addition to the class prizes there are a number of special prizes including the Premier Award, donated by the Manawatu Branch of the Royal Society. The Manawatu Science Fair is organised by a committee of interested teachers and others under the auspices of the Manawatu Branch of the Royal Society and the Kiwanis Club of Palmerston North, he said. The prize-giving ceremony will take place on Saturday September 9 at 3 p.m. Professor James Duncan from Victoria University, Wellington will present the prizes.”
