Description

This small photograph album belonged to Mrs R Andrews of Rangitikei House. This photograph bears the caption, "View PN from Ross's Building". This photograph was taken from the top of Rosco's Department Store, which would appear to be in a state of construction. It was built in 1927-192, and is now the City Library and Community Services Building. The road on the left is Broadway Avenue. The domed structure in the middle of the photograph is the Band Rotunda, the second to be situated in The Square. The first was moved to the Victoria Esplanade 1907 to make way for this second, larger, structure. It was demolished in 1956 during the construction of the Hopwood Clock Tower. The War Memorial is the white pediment visible in front - it was built only two years before this photograph was taken.
