These images were taken for the Evening Standard, the first of which was published on the 22nd of November 1995 with the caption: “Waiting for the word... Marton league winger Chance Howes.”
An excerpt from the article read: “Rookie Marton rugby league player Chance Howes faces an anxious few days after trialling for the Auckland Warriors under-19 side on Sunday.
The 17-year-old winger will be crossing his fingers and hoping to get a call from selectors telling him he's made the side for next year.
Chance admits to being very nervous before the kick-off in his trial, but his nerves soon disappeared.
"I was shaky at the kick-off and my heart just jumped when the whistle went, but after my first touch of the ball I was fine."
In only his first year of rugby league, Chance wrote away for a registration form and was offered a trial at Ericsson Stadium. More than 100 players from around the North Island took part in the five trial games, with each being divided into 15 minute quarters.
Chance played in the first trial match for the first and last quarter.”
