14 June 1902 saw one of the largest floods in Palmerston North, with water reaching just under the Fitzherbert Bridge decking and the southern approach to the bridge washed away. The water supply was cut off for 3 days, trees and parts of the riverbank were swept away and many buidings were flooded, especially in the Hokowhitu area, from where this photograph is taken.
