A bridge was first built across the Manawatu River in 1877, linking Palmerston North with the Fitzherbert area. This second concrete bridge was constructed between 1933 - 1935. This view looks from the Palmerston North side towards what is now the Summerhill Drive area, while the Manawatu River is in flood.
