This image was taken for a story that ran in The Manawatu Evening Standard on 2 May, 1963. "The schoolchildren of the Rongotea School had an exciting day with week. The school tennis courts were set up with road-safety training equipment, and the children impatiently waited to have a turn at "driving" the various cars and cycles. Under the watching eye of traffic instructor C. Boyle, of Marton, senior pupils were instructing small groups of the primary children in many aspects of road safety. Not for one moment did the children's interest flag as they completed the various safety drills. The training equipment valued at over £1200, has been in use at many schools and imparted much early training to the younger children. The parents visited the training area and recieved exactly the same training. The top left photograph shows the children doing their pedestrian-crossing drill, while the "motorist" complies with the law. The top-right picture shows the children learning how to cross safely between parked cars. Bottom left shows the correct kerb drill and bottom right shows what not to do -- children riding four abreast, ignoring the pedestrian on the crossing, swerving over the road and inviting injury or possible death."
