Description

This building, designed by H Basting and built by J Kerr, was built between 1918 - 1923 and called the "Smith Buildings'. In 1925 it housed C Smith, Drapers, on the first floor. In 1929 it was taken over by the Times newspaper. The 'Times' was the first newspaper in Palmerston North. It was established in 1875,and, at various times, was called the 'Manawatu Evening Times', 'Manawatu Daily Times' and 'The Times". In 1962 new premises were established further down Broadway Avenue and this building was sold to Hopwood Hardware Co. Ltd.
