W. L. H. Chapman owed his given names to William Luxford Hirst, the owner of a tannery near Kaiwarawara, just beyond Wellington, where William’s father John Chapman was employed for a few months after his arrival in New Zealand (together with wife Jessie and two daughters) in 1858.
