“Turning Scrap Into Cash”
- Description
-
These images were taken for the August 27th 1978 edition of the Tribune weekly newspaper – the first of which was published with the caption: “Mr Worboys ‘presents’ the weighty scales to Mr Doolan.”
The article read: “Turning scrap metal into cash, a set of scales and fire brigade rescue equipment, requires some effort. It didn't involve the Col ton-Bunnythorpe Lions Club in any extraordinary feats of metallurgy, but it did take a lot of work. Money was raised for the donations when club members held a scrap metal drive in the Colyton-Bunnythorpe area. The club's past president, Mr Brian Worboys, made the presentations at a recent meeting of the club. There to receive them were the Palmerston North administrator of the Society for the Intellectually Handicapped, Mr John Doolan, and the Bunnythorpe Fire Brigade's senior station officer, Mr Bob Lovell. A cheque for $400 went to the fire brigade, for the purchase of special equipment to aid the brigade, and the set of scales went to the IHC. The club is also presenting $300 to the Crippled Children’s Society, to help provide shelter for its new ambulance, and another cash donation is being made to Feilding's Manchester Street School so that extra equipment can be bought for its special class.”
These images form part of the Manawatū Evening Standard Negative Collection. Unfortunately, only negatives between April and December 1978 are held.
