“Council Worried About $1 Million Project”
- Description
-
These images were taken for the August 6th 1978 edition of the Tribune weekly newspaper – the first of which was published with the caption: “The Pahiatua Track, near the point where it moves out of the Pahiatua County and into the Kairanga County.”
An excerpt from the article read: “More than $1 million worth of work is needed to upgrade the Pahiatua Track, says the Pahiatua County Council. And it's applied to the National Roads Board for special funds so that the work can go ahead. The county clerk, Mr R. E. McIvor, says the road is probably the only route in the country to provide access between two state highways if another state highway is blocked. The Track is the most commonly used deviation for traffic which is prevented from using the Manawatu Gorge if that road is blocked or dangerous, he added. Because of the extra demand placed on the road by traffic that should really be using the state highway, the council feels it shouldn't have to bear the brunt of looking after and improving it…”
These images form part of the Manawatū Evening Standard Negative Collection. Unfortunately, only negatives between April and December 1978 are held.
