“Blind Man Pulled From Wrecked Car”

This image was published in the October 8th, 1978, edition of the Tribune weekly newspaper.
The short article read: “A blind diabetic man spent an uncomfortable time injured in this car after it plunged off the Pahiatua Track last week. Donald Cameron, of Feilding, was eventually taken to the Palmerston North hospital for treatment, as well as his fiancee, Miss Catherine Funnell, of Palmerston North, who was driving the car at the time of the accident.
The vehicle plunged off the road just near the Pahiatua Track's summit after failing to negotiate a sharp bend. The car shot through a farmer's fence, carrying one of the fence posts through its windscreen as it careered down a 30 foot hill before crashing nose-first into a ditch carved by a creek. And there it stayed, with its nose embedded in the bank, the post through the windscreen, and Mr Cameron trapped inside.
Passersby helped him out of the wrecked car, and he was taken to hospital by ambulance. The accident happened on Tuesday, about 11.00 am, 20 kilometres from Pahiatua. The Palmerston North hospital later reported that Mr Cameron was in a satisfactory condition. Miss Funnell was not admitted. The car was moderately damaged.”
