The lakelet was constructed in 1909, in the shape of a butterfly, with the bridge across it depicting its body. There have been 4 bridges built across the lakelet, this being the third one. It was replaced by a new bridge in 2004. Beyond can be seen the National Mutual building on the corner of Fitzherbert Avenue and The Square.
