The caption read: “Discussing problems are, from left, Mr Shirley, Colleen Ivory from Auckland (a Community Volunteers co-ordinator), Karen Thorpe (Auckland), Nita Ropata (Otara), Palmerston North City Council recreation worker Carla Leader, and the Palmerston North City Council's recreation officer, Alec Gage.”
An extract from the article read: “Community volunteers from all over New Zealand converged on Palmerston North at the beginning of this month (July 6) for their annual ‘winter gathering’. Community volunteers' national co-ordinator, Mr Chas Hamblyn, from Wellington, said the 35 volunteers arrived at the Westbrook Community Centre on July 3, and lived there until July 7. Besides eating and sleeping at the centre, the volunteers held training sessions, swapped their work experiences, exchanged ideas. and reported on the type of work each of the movement's six branches is undertaking.”
