 Local historians weekly "Back Issues" article in the Manawatū Standard. European refugees, displaced persons after World War 2, started arriving at a camp in Pahīatua in 1949. This article describes the journey and October 1950 Wellington arrival of the Hellenic Prince, the second of three New Zealand government commissioned International Refugee Organisation ships to bring the displaced persons to New Zealand. After the long sea journey, 971 passengers travelled by train to Pahīatua, stopping in Palmerston North en route. About 200 citizens gathered at the Palmerston North railway station to welcome the new citizens to the wider region.
