In 1963 a Museum Investigating Committee was set up which resulted in the formation of the Manawatu Museum Planning Society in 1967, with the aim to establish a museum in Palmerston North. This resulted in the Manawatu Museum Society Inc being formed in 1970 with a museum opening in April of 1971. The Manawatu Museum was formally opened by the Mayor, Mr Black, at the new museum rooms at 15 Amesbury Street, Palmerston North.
