Veterinary Sciences Complex and Hopkirk Building
- Description
The Veterinary Sciences Complex is home to New Zealand’s only veterinary school.
The buildings comprising the complex were erected over several decades. The first building to be erected was the Veterinary Clinic Building, completed in May 1968. Following this, the Tower Block was completed in 1971. Both buildings were designed by architects of the Ministry of Works.
New stables were erected in 1978.
The Hopkirk Research Institute, the southern hemisphere's largest concentration of health sciences for pastoral-fed animals, was opened in March 2007. The institute is collaboration between AgResearch and Massey University and contains almost 4,000sqm of state-of-the-art laboratory space.
In 2017 Wildbase Hospital’s new premises were opened at the Veterinary Complex.
Enabling work for a new post-mortem facility and production animal hospital started in 2019.
In January 2019, the Tower Block was deemed earthquake prone. Plans are afoot to demolish it and build a replacement.
