The third incarnation of the Commercial Hotel was built in 1935 on the corner of Main Street and Te Marae o Hine, The Square. It was demolished in 1986. After the Milson deviation was completed in 1960 and the new Railway Station opend in October 1963, fewer trains travelled through The Square. The last train passed through the city centre in June 1964 and later that month work began on removing the railway tracks from The Square.
