Constructed as a memorial to the first Mayor of Whanganui, William Hogg Watt. The fountain has been placed in many locations since it was first installed at the intersection of Victoria Avenue and Ridgway Street in 1881. In 1906, the fountain was moved to Cooks Gardens. It was later kept in Council storage until being shifted to Queens Park from the 1930s until it was relocated to its original location in 1993.
