This image was published in the December 10th, 1978, edition of the Tribune weekly newspaper.
An excerpt from the article read: “Laboratory technician Dennis Todd, tries out the Palmerston North City Corporation's new $14,000 atomic absorption spectophotometer, which has just been installed. This instrument will greatly ease the council laboratory's work-load and extend its capabilities. It will be able to do analysis which was previously impossible for the laboratory to carry out, and will reduce other work to as little as a few minutes, compared with the previous half-day it would take.
The Corporation's laboratory is concerned with the analysis of a wide range of materials but particularly with analysis of water or waste water samples. In such samples analysis for certain constituents is extremely important - calcium and magnesium for water hardness, aluminium for water treatment efficiency, iron and manganes for potability, copper and zinc for corrosion testing, lead, cadmium, chromium and others for the toxicity of waste discharges, silicon for boiler feed waters, and so forth.”
