This image was published in the July 23rd 1978 edition of the Tribune weekly newspaper.
The caption read: “Last week’s winds wreaked havoc around the Manawatu - yet the district escaped the worst of the storm that hit New Zealand. The gales flattened the old Ashhurst mil depot (which was due for demolition anyway), pushed over macrocarpa trees on Forest Hill Road, Aokautere, didn’t do Mr Walding’s sign any good in Rangitikei Line, lifted roofing iron, and battered other properties throughout the province. And that was only some of the damage. Yet the province got off lightly.”
This image forms part of the Manawatū Evening Standard Negative Collection. Unfortunately, only negatives between April and December 1978 are held.
