“Cloverlea Wines And Spirits Opening Tuesday”
- Description
-
These images were taken for the May 7th, 1978, edition of the Tribune weekly newspaper, but were not published. They accompany an article about the opening of Cloverlea Wines and Spirits next to the Cloverlea Tavern (which opened in 1974).
An excerpt from the article read: “The south-western corner of Palmerston North will have its own wholesale liquor outlet from Tuesday when Cloverlea Wines and Spirits opens its new premises next to the Cloverlea Tavern. Interestingly enough, Cloverlea Wines and Spirits might be housed in a new building, and provide an entirely new service for this part of town - but an attempt has been made with the building to create a little bit of "old" New Zealand as well. One of the features of the Cloverlea Tavern, of course, is the high-pitched grable-ended roof supported on steel portals, and the re-creation of old-style building materials inside. The same approach has been taken with Cloverlea Wines and Spirits. The roof matches in with the tavern and the TAB, which is also alongside. Inside the wholesale outlets customers will find examples of older forms of building, such as match lining and boards used for bracing. All three buildings, the wholesale premises, the tavern and the TAB, were designed by city architect Jack Cantlon.”
These images form part of the Manawatū Evening Standard Negative Collection. Unfortunately, only negatives between April and December 1978 are held.
