These images were taken by Mark Lapwood for the Evening Standard, the first of which was published on the 11th of August 1989 with the caption: “Manawatu’s Anthony Farmer sprints away from his West Coast pursuers during yesterday's under-19 rugby league match.”
The short article read: “Manawatu had to settle for second place in the B division of the New Zealand under-19 rug- by league tournament which finished at Massey University yesterday.
Manawatu beat West Coast 26-6 but the home team's loss to Taranaki on Wednesday proved costly. It was Manawatu's only defeat following a 54-0 defeat of Hawke's Bay and a 29-0 win over Otago.
Taranaki beat Otago 22-2 to win the group with West Coast in third place. Otago was fourth and Hawke's Bay, which had the bye yesterday, lost all four games and was fifth.
Auckland regained the champion's mantle it had lost last year. Auckland recovered from its last-gasp draw with Waikato on Wednesday to wallop Wellington 28-4 and take top place in the A division. Waikato had to win by 40 points over defending champion Canterbury to overtake Auckland but Canter- bury upended Waikato 12-10.
Waikato was third, Wellington fourth and Bay of Plenty fifth.
Meanwhile, selectors at the tournament yesterday named two players with family rugby league pedigrees in the New Zealand under-19 squad.
Auckland's Bucky Tuimavave and Taranaki's Joseph Kemp have been named in the token 17-man squad. Centre Tuimavave is the younger brother of Auckland captain Paddy and Canterbury- Bankstown rookie Tony.
Reserve back Kemp is the younger brother of Newcastle Knights and Kiwi back Tony.
The team also has the three outstanding players of the under-19 tournament - Auckland winger Karl McCulloch, West Coast loose forward Patrick Kiely and Manawatu second rower Anthony Farmer.
McCulloch and Kiely were the winners of a 10-day scholar- ship to the Brisbane Broncos next February.”
