Mr. T.V. Brown built the Feilding Hotel in 1875. It was the town's first licenced hotel since the Earl of Denbigh was initially built as an accommodation house and only later became licensed. Its opening meant that Feilding residents no longer had to make the rough journey to Awahuri when they wanted a drink. By 1880 James Hastie had acquired the Feilding Hotel after which it was referred to as Hastie's Hotel. After James Hastie's death, his wife Martha ran the hotel for several years.
