The short article read: “Three years of entries, and they finally paid off - Mrs Olive Nant, of Palmerston North, collects her share of Radio 2ZA's "Rugby Jackpot" from station manager Mr P Parker. Looking on is announcer David Poppelwell. Mrs Nant won $510, which was half the jackpot of $1020. And the other half? Well, that went to a woman too Mrs C Winnard, of Pahiatua. They won the rugby jackpot after predicting the half-time and full-time scores of the first rugby test between Australia and New Zealand - with a half-time prediction of 10 New Zealand points to Australia's six, and a full time score of 13-12. Mrs Nant said she had been "knocking pretty close" to winning for a few weeks before she finally struck the jackpot. She intends using the money for an extra holiday. The cheque presentation was made "on-air" at the station, with announcer David Poppelwell giving encouragement. The jackpot will continue until the end of the rugby season, although the total offered in prizemoney has declined after the win by Mrs Nant and Mrs Winnard. About 5000 entries were received for the estimation of the first test's score. The jackpot is sponsored by Five Star Mazda, DB Wines and Spirits, Co-Op Honda, Owen Warnock's, the Broadtop Pharmacy and Broadlands' finance centre.”
