-
These images were taken for the July 2nd, 1978 edition of the Tribune weekly newspaper – the first of which was published. They depict one of the Palmerston North Aged Widow and Invalids' Association’s oldest members – Mrs B. Keane – being assisted by Mrs Elwood, the wife of Mayor Brian Elwood.
The short article read: “Visitors from Shannon, Levin, Woodville and Feilding attended the 26th birthday celebrations of the Palmerston North Aged Widow and Invalids' Association on Wednesday. Special guests at the celebration were Mrs B. G. C. Elwood, the wife of Palmerston North's mayor, and Mrs J. Lithgow, wife of the Member for the city, Mr Lithgow. Palmerston North city councillor Mrs Maureen Bird was also there, as well as a former city mayor, Mr G. Rennie, and his wife. Mr and Mrs Rennie are patron and patroness of the organisation. The birthday celebration was held in the Alfred St hall, and about 80 people attended. The Rev. M. Cleland officiated. Vocal items were provided by Mrs G. Carrington-Smith, and she was accompanied by Mrs. R. Edwards.”
