Description

In James Mitchell's plan of Palmerston North of 1866, Main Street is shown as Ahuriri Road in the course of formation as a horse and cattle track. In Henry Jackson's plan of 1872 the name is changed to the Great Northern Road. The photograph appeared in the "Evening Standard" 26/2/1927 where it was thought to date from 1885-90, but it is thought in fact to be the later date (ie 1908)
