These images were taken for the December 3rd, 1978 edition of the Tribune weekly newspaper, the first of which was published with the caption “$1,900 richer - thanks to the "Tribune", Bruce Davies, who works with the Palmerston North City Council's gas department, elatedly holds the $1,900 he won for submitting one correct entry in the "Tribune" Bestword competition. Bruce intends to use the money to buy a car. And what was his secret for success? Well, he said, he'd been submitting entries for some time, but using alternative words instead of his first answers to the crossword puzzle clues. This time he just pat down the first words that came into his head.....”
