This image was taken for a story that ran in The Manawatu Evening Standard on 12 June 1961: Michael Hardie, of Palmerston North received a letter from Radio Moscow replying to his letter congratulating Yuri Gagarin on being the first man in space and his circumnavigation of the Earth. He also received a photograph of Yuri Gagarin and a set of the commemorative stamp issue which depicted the historical achievement.
